Among my favorite discoveries while reporting Sunset's December/January ode to the Colorado winter, "Powder to the People": The Aspen Art Museum will give you free slippers so you can come in right off the slopes; Heck's Tavern at Devil's Thumb Ranch is the place to be for apres-XC skiing; and there exists in the world a place where you can get a breakfast egg sandwich that uses donuts instead of bread.
Now for something totally different: The Long Way 'Round, by far the most personal and challenging story I've ever written, is out in the May issue of Backpacker. The piece tracks my 3-week journey on Montana's new Sacred Door Trail, an American pilgrimage that aims to bring a healthy dose of spirituality to the backcountry trek. Did it work? It did--and then some.
